Chief Minister Jon Stanhope today turned the first sod on Community Housing Canberra's (CHC) affordable rental development in Forde.
The 20 one and two bedroom units will be offered to low and middles income earners at 74.9 per cent of market rent.
"This development demonstrates the commitment of CHC to providing high quality affordable rental accommodation to Canberrans on low and middle incomes," Mr Stanhope said.
As part of the ACT Affordable Housing Action Plan, CHC is tasked with providing 1,000 new affordable dwellings over the next ten years, 500 of which will be rental properties.
Funding through the National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS) will enable tenants to pay below market value rents.
This project demonstrates the successful partnership between the Australian and ACT Governments and the community housing sector in delivering affordable rental housing to Canberrans who are on low and middle incomes.
Not just affordable, the architect designed units will have a minimum 5 star energy rating with most achieving 6 stars.
"This is a quality, sustainable development that will offer affordable rental accommodation as well as reducing energy costs for tenants", Mr Stanhope said.CHC will deliver a number of affordable housing developments in Canberra this year, including rental properties in both North and South Canberra and new units for purchase by first home buyers in Gungahlin.
