Affordable Housing Design Competition winners

Released 31/03/2008

108/08 31 March 2008

Chief Minister Jon Stanhope today announced the winners in the Housing Industry Association (HIA) and Royal Australian Institute of Architects (RAIA) Affordable Housing Design Competition.

“HIA and REIA have partnered on this important competition with the ACT Government pleased to provide $15,000 funding for the awards, as part of its Affordable Housing Action Plan announced last year,” Mr Stanhope said.

“HIA and RAIA are to be congratulated for taking carriage of this important initiative, and for committing themselves, and their considerable influence, to the pursuit of excellence in affordable housing design and construction.”

Showcasing excellence in affordable dwelling construction and design through this competition, and the two demonstration villages released at Franklin and Dunlop, will help to increase diversity in the market by demonstrating new affordable housing products.

“This is a wonderful example of how the Government and private industry can partner on initiatives to showcase innovation”

“The awards are designed to encourage and foster innovative thinking and design. They are about rejecting the notion that size equals quality, or that design excellence is the province only of those who can afford to pay a premium.

“They show that good design can be married with affordable construction to provide quality housing and design choices for both standard residential blocks and compact blocks in new areas, and for redevelopment sites in established areas.”

The ACT Labor Government has also progressed many other initiatives in the Affordable Housing Action Plan including:

  • increased the supply of land to the market – by an additional 1000 blocks to an unprecedented total of 3200 this financial year;
  • streamlined the release and approval processes for land, including responding to industry calls for englobo releases;
  • mandated the delivery of new house and land packages priced between $200,000 and $300,000;
  • provided more generous and more targeted financial concessions, to help more Canberrans take the step into home ownership, and to do so with greater confidence and less trepidation;
  • embarked on an exciting initiative that will involve private investors in the provision of affordable private rental accommodation;
  • massively expanded the role of community housing;
  • ensured that better and more targeted use is made of public housing; and
  • released two demonstration projects to showcase affordable land and housing packages.

The winning designs will be on display at the HIA Home Ideas Showroom at 28 Collie Street, Fyshwick for the next two weeks.
