AFFORDABLE HOUSING - TAKING STEPS TO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN
Affordable housing can be defined as housing that is safe, appropriate and accessible, for which not more than 30% of one's gross household income goes toward housing services such as rent or mortgage repayments. In this sense, affordable housing refers to the idea that everyone deserves a reasonable place to live.
In April 2007, the ACT Government released the Affordable Housing Action Plan. Since then, significant steps have been taken to improve housing affordability and availability in Canberra. Although there’s no ‘quick fix’ or single solution, already the ACT community is benefitting from the substantial progress of the Action Plan that has been achieved so far.
This website presents the Affordable Housing Action Plan Progress Report, bringing you up to date with what’s been happening. It looks at the initiatives proposed by the Affordable Housing Action Plan, and tells you what has actually been achieved against each of them. You can get an overview from the pages on this site, download Fact Sheets on individual initiatives, or download the whole Progress Report for detailed information.
