STEPS IN COMMUNITY HOUSING
Community and not-for-profit housing providers play an important role in providing affordable rental accommodation for low to moderate income earners, particularly those who do not qualify for public housing. Generally they are at least partly subsidised by government.
The ACT Government is supporting CHC Affordable Housing (CHA) so that it can deliver 1,000 new affordable properties for sale or rent over the next ten years. This involves providing direct grants of land, transferring properties from Housing ACT to CHC and providing a $50 million loan facility.
ACTION PLAN GOAL
Support the community housing sector to enable it to grow and to meet the accommodation needs of Canberrans, particularly those who do not meet the income criteria for public housing.

From rental accommodation to home ownership
Through CHC Affordable Housing, the Government wants to help people move from renting to owning their own homes. For this reason CHC is currently exploring purchasing options for eligible tenants and home buyers. Shared equity means the relevant entity continues to own a share of the home and you buy the rest. When you sell, the proceeds are divided according to your share.
